Mission

The Department of Economics and Management (DISEI) promotes scientific research and advanced education in line with the University’s mission, contributing to social, cultural, and economic development at the local, national, and international levels. Within this framework, the Department values its strong roots in Tuscany and Central Italy through long-standing relationships with the productive sector and an active commitment to supporting public policies.

Research activities are developed across the theoretical and empirical fields of economics, business studies, history, and mathematics (Area 13), with a strong transdisciplinary orientation integrating contributions from legal sciences (Area 12), geography (Area 11), and agricultural sciences (Area 7). DISEI is the reference department for 12 academic disciplines within Area 13 and for one discipline within Area 11, while also serving as co-reference department for additional disciplines in Areas 12 and 7. This broad multidisciplinary approach, combined with solid quantitative and empirical expertise and a data-driven perspective, represents a distinctive feature of the Department, strengthening both the quality of scientific output and the effectiveness of teaching activities.

The educational offer is comprehensive and structured across all academic levels. The Department is responsible for four Bachelor’s degree programmes and five Master’s degree programmes, including international programmes and bilingual tracks, as well as eight Double Degree programmes. In addition, DISEI provides a highly qualified third-level educational offer through two PhD programmes and participation in two regional Pegaso doctoral programmes. Of particular importance are the integrated educational pathways focused on development and sustainability, extending seamlessly from undergraduate studies to doctoral education.

Teaching activities are characterised by the adoption of innovative and participatory methodologies, including laboratories, project work, and blended learning approaches, aimed at fostering students’ active engagement. International attractiveness is supported by programmes taught in English, mobility schemes, and joint degree pathways, with a steadily increasing number of international students.

DISEI participates in national and European research projects (including PRIN, PRIN PNRR, and extended partnerships within the PNRR framework) on topics such as market design, individual behaviour, and public policies, with significant applied implications in areas including sustainable mobility and health communication. Internationalisation represents a strategic priority pursued through collaborations with foreign universities, participation in international networks and research projects, and joint educational initiatives.

Overall, DISEI’s mission is reflected in its ability to integrate high-quality research, innovative educational provision, and structured relationships with institutions, businesses, and stakeholders, thereby making a significant contribution to the development and wellbeing of the local area.
